Undergrad

I first started my undergraduate degree at the University of Evansville in Evansville,Indiana. We met with our advisors and mine said that since I was already fluent in Spanish, that I should try something more challenging. I chose Japanese as the other languages that were offered were Romance languages, and I wanted a challenge. Evansville was my introduction to university including the Freshman 15 and living in a dormitory. My dorm had ONE phone that was shared by my roommate and I and our neighbor who was the floor monitor, so she didn’t have to have a roommate. We had team building activities and through those activities, I met good friends. The university had a clock tower that served as a meeting point. We had a bunch of activities to choose from. I chose university ministry activities including building houses with Habitat for Humanity and bowling with the special Olympics team. I also did tutoring for some young kids who had trouble learning to read.

During my time at Evansville I pledged a sorority because my sister was an Alpha Phi, and had lifelong friends. I didn’t persist because on one tour of a fraternity house, there was a closet that had beds in it. I got so concerned that I had to get out of the house as soon as possible. I was freaking out.

In addition to political science, Japanese, and other requirements, I took Anthropology. I LOVED that class and considered changing my major from Political Science to Anthropology. Thank you Dr.Berry!

With my friends, I attended soccer games, football games, and church activities. I attended step class and would ride my bike nearly every day though the neighborhoods and by the Great Lake. I felt so free but at the same time, I felt sad to be away from home and my parents. I attended some concerts like the symphony and on one occasion, we all participated on a hayride. Pretty innocuous stuff but I enjoyed my time at UofE. After one semester, I was tired of feeling homesick, and decided to change to DePaul University so that I could room with my sister.
